Silverside

The sand smelt (gümüş balığı) is a small but tasty freshwater fish. In Turkey, it is especially caught in lakes such as Eğirdir and Beyşehir, and its popularity has been increasing in recent years. Although its size resembles that of anchovy, it lives in freshwater and can be prepared deliciously using a variety of cooking methods.

  • Habitat: Mostly freshwater, but some species can also live in brackish and marine waters

  • Distribution in Turkey: Lakes Eğirdir, Beyşehir, İznik, and Uluabat

  • Size: Typically 5–10 cm (a very small fish)

  • Appearance: Slender and elongated, shiny silver in color. It resembles anchovy but has a more delicate structure.
